Libraries Connect Ohio: Online Resources for Students using the Ohio Web Library

Eureka! It Works! Finding Science Fair Project Information On-line
Picture this...it's been a busy Thursday. It's 8:45pm...fifteen minutes before you close and three kids approach the desk. They ask the question you knew would come sooner or later...
"I have to do a science fair project and it's due tomorrow...can you help me?"
Since you may not have enough printed sources to go around, rely on those you can find online.Point them to resources on the Ohio Web Library for ideas, step-by-step instructions and more.

Magazine articles with science fair projects are easy to find at: www.ohioweblibrary.org. To access Science Activities magazine follow these steps:
- Select: Resources ->
- Select: Masterfile Premier ->
- Select: Advanced Search -> Search Term: science projects (Title) and Science Activities (Journal Name)
You can also direct these last minute scientists to http://www.infohio.org and follow these steps:
- Select: Core Collection ->
- Select: SIRS Discoverer ->
- Put a Dot in Subject Search ->
- Search Term: science projects
NOTE: You'll need a password and username. Give INFOhio a call at 614-752-2941 or toll-free: 877-463-6450 and ask for the password and username. Email will work too: central@infohio.org
The results are spectacular. Every one with a lower case “a” next to the title is an article with an activity. Cool.
How can you to help the high school senior wants to do a science project having to do with the environment or pollution? Once again, the Ohio Web Library is an excellent resource. Go to www.ohioweblibrary.org and follow these steps:
- Select: Resources ->
- Select: Science Online -> Under "Browse Science Resources
- Select: Experiments -> Under the Heading "Environmental Science"
- Select: All Environmental Science
- Select: Step-by-step experiments.
Finally, I recommend printing this handout for students… kidhosweo1010.doc. The instructions include ten science projects students can do at home with stuff found around the house. One experiment involves lighting a match, so make sure they promise not to do that one without an adult around.
