The St. Marys Community Public Library 2009 Summer Reading Program will be in full bloom the month of June with each week featuring another aspect of the “Be Creative @ Your Library!” and “Express Yourself @ Your Library!” themes. Participants will focus on Music, Dance/Movement, Visual Arts, and Drama/Storytelling, respectively.
A calendar of events given to youth at registration lists a program or activity on nearly every day, culminating in a final party and prizes. High points from each week follow:
“Garbage Can to Garbage Band” during Music Week, June 1-6. Families work together to create three musical instruments from trash, then play them as a band for a whole new sound of music at the Library!
June 8-13 highlights Dance/Movement with Dance Parties for all ages with the intrepid Youth Services Staff teaching traditional dance steps. No doubt we’ll be busting a few new moves at this program.
Visual Arts during the week of June 15-20 means Summer Readers will learn to create coil pottery. Budding potters will have their creations bisque-fired at Arts Place, a local arts center, or may take them to the local Farmer’s Market on the weekend for firing in a kiln there.
June 22-27 features Drama/Storytelling with unique interpretations of common games. Youth will have the opportunity to play Pictionary using modeling clay instead of pencil and paper and to play a human card game where each participant wears a card and participants are shuffled and played until one team wins.
Coinciding with the weekly themes for youth, adult summer programs include Medieval Dance, Sketching with Heidi, and Edible Art. At St. Marys Community Public Library, Summer Reading is fun for everyone!
