Endings and Beginnings

2011 has been an exciting year full of change for the State Library of Ohio. There have been staffing changes due to retirements, new hires and internal promotions, new initiatives such as the ILS Consortium Grants, the introduction of MANGO Languages and Ancestry to the Ohio Web Library, and of course a new Biennium Budget, which became effective on July 1, 2011.

As we begin a new calendar year, we are looking forward to even more changes and the new opportunities those changes will bring.  In January, the State Library will begin developing a new strategic plan to guide our work over the next Biennium.  Our hope is to have the plan in place by July 1, 2012 so that it may serve as a backdrop for the development of the State Library’s Biennial Budget for State Fiscal Years 2014 – 2015. Work on the development of that Budget will begin next summer.  On January 15, David Namiotka, who has been the State Library’s Director of Information Systems and Technology for the past five years, will become the new Associate State Librarian for Library Services. Also, after 28 years serving the State Library of Ohio, Diane Fink, Chief Fiscal Officer and Head of Fiscal Services will retire. Although we will miss Diane we wish her well as she begins this next step in her life.

Finally, this marks the final edition of The News, a monthly newsletter that has been produced by the State Library since 1958.  Beginning in the first quarter of 2012, The News will be replaced by The Ohio Libraries Quarterly, a quarterly publication that will include articles focused on a central theme.  The inaugural issue will focus on Emerging Technologies.  The Ohio Libraries Quarterly welcomes articles submitted by state agencies, Ohio libraries, and library related organizations. Articles should be between 500 and 600 words in length and pertain to the specific theme of the quarter.  For more information or to submit articles for publication, please contact Marsha McDevitt-Stredney at marshams@library.ohio.gov.
