SEO’s Users Group

Over 130 members of the SEO Automation Consortium met at Cherry Valley Lodge May 12 for the SEO Users Group meeting.  Dianna Clark welcomed the participants and the Head of Fiscal and Business Services, Diane Fink, presented the financial report.   Introductions were made during the opening session along with updates from Chris Harris at SirsiDynix and Doug Evans at OLC.

The one day packed full of practical ideas, upcoming innovations and friendly interchanges included several small group sessions of interest to members including U.S. Cargo, Digital Library Collection-Downloading, Learning Express-Job & Career Accelerator, Symphony Highlights, Serial Success, OPLIN webkits and Website Best Practices, Changes you can make in Horizon, Directors’ Toolkit,  All Aboard: Jump on the Train, Enterprise Search and Discovery, Display and Sort Function in Horizon, and Managed IT Services.

Mike Schmidt of Cramer Fundraising was the Lunch Keynote Speaker.

Follow-up online evaluations indicated that many people found the meeting was well worth the trip, informative and a good location.

The May 11 Symphony ILS product demonstration was well attended.  After the demo, refreshments were provided by SirsiDynix in the patio area.

Training Facilities

SEO Library Center, located in Caldwell, Ohio, has a computer lab available at no cost to any state agency and Ohio library group.  The lab is equipped with 14 computers with internet access and a projection screen.  In 2011, the machines were upgraded and Windows 7 was installed.

There were seven workshops held in 2011 (January—November) at either the F. Ward Murrey Annex or the SEO Library Center with 58 people attending.  Also, there were a total of 57 meetings scheduled using either videoconferencing or webinars for internal staff trainings.

For more information or to schedule the training lab, please contact Paula Buco at 877-553-4262.

State Library Board Meeting

The State Library Board was to meet at the SEO Library Center on October 20, 2011.  The meeting was canceled and rescheduled for May 31, 2012.  However, even though the State Library Board could not meet at the SEO Library Center, they did conduct their meeting at the State Library of Ohio in Columbus.

State Library of Ohio’s Mobile Computer Training Lab

We’re very happy to say that we’ve had another prosperous year with the mobile lab, with each library being thankful to seize its opportunity.  The lab is scheduled from Tuesday thru Tuesday at the libraries, and the lab had forty weeks scheduled, with seventeen of these being a first visit.

As with previous years, the lab (generator and main engine) was serviced quarterly, and other than a few minor mechanical issues, we’ve been fortunate to be able to transport the lab from one library to another without any real issues.

October 1, 2010 through September 30, 2011:

  1. 40 library visits
  2. 358 classes taught
  3. 1,978 participants

In January of 2012, The State Library of Ohio’s Mobile Technology Training Center will begin its tenth year serving public libraries across Ohio.  The training center, housed at the SEO Library Center in Caldwell, has just recently undergone a transformation in December 2011, as the exterior has been repainted, adding a full scale graphic mural and new carpeting throughout.

SEO purchased a PBS collection of 509 videos with maximum access or always available rights.  This is a standing order plan which will need to be renewed or cancelled after a year.

Digipalooza

One staff member attended this eBook conference during the end of July and beginning of August.  The conference was held in Cleveland, Ohio.
