Genealogy
Interest in genealogy has grown considerably in recent years, spurring some to call genealogy “the fastest growing hobby in North America.” In July 2009, a survey conducted by Harris Interactive indicated that 87% of Americans were interested in learning more about their family histories. This interest has been fueled by a combination of factors, including recent television programs such as “Faces of America with Henry Louis Gates” and “Who Do You Think You Are?” The availability of online genealogy databases such as Ancestry.com, FamilySearch, Family Tree Connections, and many more has also contributed to the growing popularity of genealogical research. Ohio’s public and school libraries have witnessed this increase firsthand as more and more people have come to them looking for information to help guide them in their quests to trace their ancestry. In response to several requests and comments from the library community, the State Library used LSTA funds to add Ancestry.com to the Ohio Web Library as a one year pilot project. As expected, use of this resource has been extremely high, particularly in public libraries, and the State Library is examining the feasibility of extending the project for another year. This issue of our newsletter examines genealogy and the many genealogy-related services being provided by libraries. Tracing your ancestry may begin with a visit to your library, either in person or online. Beverly Cain A list of upcoming themes for The News is available on the Contribute to the News page.
