In Just One Day…

…you can create the story of your library, and how you impact your community.

In Just One Day…

…you can help build the case that will help lawmakers understand the importance of funding & support for Ohio Libraries.

In Just One Day…

…you CAN make a difference.

Between November 13 and 19, 2011, libraries across Ohio can pick a day to collect photographs, stories, information, and comments to show what takes place in the library on a typical day.  Libraries will upload photos and video to a Flickr group (Ohio Library Snapshot Day 2011)  and fill out an online survey through Survey Monkey.  The results will show that libraries consistently provide invaluable services to their communities.

Reasons to participate in Library Snapshot Day

  • A chance to get publicity for and raise awareness of the library in the community.
  • Use the data gathered to show community leaders, legislators and the public how library use is growing.
  • Position the library as an important part of the community’s infrastructure that plays a key role in providing equal access to resources vital for thriving in today’s digital world.
  • Use the data to remind users and funders that the increased usage is occurring at the same time library funding has been decreasing.
  • Show the importance of the library as a community center which has become an integral part in economic development and job searches by providing Job Help Centers, resume writing materials, internet access for job searches and a variety of other services.
  • Gather anecdotal evidence from library users that show how libraries are a transformational force in people’s lives. Sharing stories from library users creates a powerful message.
  • Show that libraries have become a main outlet for E-government by providing the computers and internet connectivity for patrons to access all of the online governmental services.

The toolkit was created to make it easy for libraries to participate.  If you would like to see examples of Snapshot Day in other states go to the ALA's Snapshot Day website. We have used several of the items in the Snapshot Day primer as templates for the Ohio toolkit.

Snapshot Day: A Day in the Life of Ohio Libraries is a project of the State Library of Ohio, the Ohio Library Council, OPLIN, the Academic Library Association of Ohio, OhioLINK, the Ohio Educational Library Media Association, and INFOhio.  Each year, Ohio libraries will participate in this advocacy effort by collecting photographs, stories, information, and comments to get a snapshot of a typical day in Ohio libraries.  All types of libraries are encouraged to participate to showcase what libraries do for Ohio residents.
