Purpose
The State Library recognizes the unique needs and legal rights of nursing mothers. Conference Room A has been made available for nursing mothers, should they need to express breast milk or if they desire privacy while nursing their children.
For Customers
Location: 274 E 1st Avenue, Columbus, OH 43201
For State Library employees and customers located at 274 E 1st Avenue, the following areas have been designated lactation areas:
- Conference Room A (primary) and
- Conference Rooms B and C (secondary).
The door to each conference room is fitted with a push lock, enabling the nursing mother privacy to express breast milk. A “Do Not Disturb” sign is available in each room to be posted on the outside of the conference room door when the room is in use by a nursing mother. Employees and visitors are responsible for consulting conference room schedules prior to utilizing the space. Customers of the State Library should consult with staff at the Circulation desk to determine conference room availability for the purposes of expressing breast milk.
These rooms are not exclusive to being lactation areas. If these conference rooms are in use at the time a nursing mother is in need, please consult the Head, Employee Services and/or the Associate State Librarian for Library Services for an alternate area to use (e.g. vacant office space, private lounge area, etc.).
Alternate Areas
When requesting an alternate area, please ensure that:
- The area is equipped with an electrical outlet;
- The area is in close proximity to a clean sink;
- The area has comfortable seating and a table or flat surface to hold the breast pump; and
- A sign that says “DO NOT DISTURB” is available.
Under no circumstances should a restroom be used for a nursing mother to express breast milk.
