“It’s always hard for me to choose just one book when I’m asked to name a favorite. Since I write for kids, for this poster I picked one of my favorites from when I was about twelve years old: From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, by E.L. Konigsburg. I read this book many, many times as a kid, and always enjoyed the mystery, the intrigue, the notion of running away to a museum—and the way the kids in the book grow and change.”

“A third grader asked me why my name was on the cover of WHERE THE STEPS WERE.

“Because I’m the author,” I said.

She shook her head. “Carmen, Dawn, Kayla, Jonathan, and Anthony wrote it.”

She thought the poems were actually written by the characters in the book.
